Stocks Waver. Inflation Headlines Are Sending Wall Street Mixed Signals.
Stocks were posting muted gains on Thursday after the latest inflation headlines sent Wall Street mixed signals on how prices are being impacted by the rollout of tariffs across the globe.
The Dow was up 75 points, or 0.2%, after trading lower this morning. The S&P 500 was up 0.1%. The Nasdaq Composite was down 0.3%.
The stock market spent the bulk of the past month climbing out of the hole it fell into after President Donald Trump unveiled steep tariffs on most trading partners. With the S&P 500 back in positive territory on the year, investors may begin a pivot from riding momentum to taking a more serious look at earnings and inflation expectations.
