BMW Group Plant Landshut enhances digitalisation in production
The BMW Group is enhancing digitalisation in its component production, with the Landshut plant using AI-supported data analysis to detect anomalies and prevent cyberattacks.
The plant employs digital process control and networked production facilities to improve productivity and quality.
BMW Group Plant Landshut head Thomas Thym said: "We not only implement technical progress, but also actively shape it in order to secure our competitiveness in the long term. Behind every digital car there must also be a digital factory."
A central element of BMW's digitalisation strategy is the "Shopfloor.Digital" transformation programme.
This aims to harmonise manufacturing processes and IT systems across all 30 production sites globally.
The company is developing a cloud-based IT architecture, leveraging process automation and AI solutions, with the Landshut plant playing a crucial role in this transformation.
BMW digitalisation of component manufacturing head Franz Heigl added: "We view complexity as an opportunity and use the data we gain to continuously improve our processes.”
BMW is also advancing digitalisation in its lean management approaches, including a digital process map, a digital disruption process, and value stream management.
The digitalisation initiative extends to logistics and manufacturing.
At the Landshut plant, sensors, real-time data, and AI-driven processes optimise supply chains, material flows, and production processes.
This connectivity with suppliers aims to prevent bottlenecks and conserve resources.
In cockpit production, the Landshut plant uses automation and digitalisation, with around 50 quality features checked in 30 seconds during final quality control.
This is followed by automated packaging and transport using autonomous systems that operate independently without external control.
